Toddlers + Summer = Endless Outdoor Fun

Summertime is here, meaning it's time to get out and explore all the fun and exciting activities your area offers! This is especially true if you're fortunate enough to have good summer weather and plenty to do in your area. Which is not true in my case. Whether you have toddlers at home or just looking for fun adventures, there's no shortage of ways to make the most of the warm weather and long days. So, grab your sunscreen, pack a picnic, and prepare to create unforgettable summer memories outdoors with your family!

1. Explore a Nature Center

  • Discover hidden gems within your community, offering a calm escape from the daily grind.

  • Encourage your little ones' curiosity through hands-on displays, allowing them to get up close and personal with leaves, rocks, and other natural treasures.

  • Enjoy a budget-friendly day out, as many nature centers offer free or low-cost admission.

  • Pack a picnic lunch, bring nature-themed books or field guides, and immerse yourselves in the great outdoors.

  • Spark your kids' curiosity and foster a lifelong love for nature through this enriching experience.

2. Cool Off at a Splash Park

  • Splash parks are interactive water playgrounds featuring sprinklers, fountains, and water jets.

  • They allow kids to run, jump, and splash around, burning off energy while staying refreshed.

  • Most splash parks are free, making them a budget-friendly summer activity.

  • Pack essentials like swimsuits, towels, sunscreen, and a change of clothes.

  • Don't forget to pack a picnic lunch to enjoy in the shady areas surrounding the splash park.

  • Suitable for toddlers and tweens alike, a trip to the splash park creates lasting summer memories.

3. Roam Through a Zoo

  • Visit your local zoo for a wild adventure.

  • Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy on the shady zoo grounds, and wear comfortable shoes for all the walking and exploring you'll be doing. Many zoos also offer train rides, carousels, and other fun attractions to entertain the kids for hours.

  • A trip to the zoo is a great way to spark your child's imagination, foster a love of animals, and create unforgettable summer memories, whether you have a budding zoologist or just a curious nature lover in your family.

4. Learn Something New at a Museum

  • Explore local museums to discover something new and spark your toddler's curiosity.

  • Look for interactive exhibits and hands-on activities designed to engage and educate kids.

  • Encourage your little ones to touch, explore, and experiment their way through the displays.

  • Check if the museum offers special programs or events for kids, like scavenger hunts, story times, or craft workshops.

  • Take advantage of free or discounted admission for kids, making it a budget-friendly summer activity.

  • Don't forget to pack a picnic lunch and bring art supplies or notebooks for your toddler.

  • Some venues have food trucks or concession stands for a full movie-going experience

  • Dress for the weather, as evenings can be cool, even in the summer

6. Discover a Local Farmer's Market

  • Support your local community by visiting a vibrant outdoor farmer's market.

  • Explore the various locally-grown fruits and vegetables, artisanal baked goods, jams, honey, and other delicious treats.

  • Let your little ones pick out their own fresh produce and learn about where their food comes from.

  • Enjoy live music, food trucks, and other fun activities.

  • Stroll through the stalls, sample new foods, and chat with friendly farmers and vendors.

  • Support small businesses and connect with your local community.

  • Bring a reusable bag or basket to carry your purchases, and leave room in your cooler for perishable items.

  • Many farmer's markets accept SNAP/EBT benefits, making them an affordable option for families on a budget.

7. Take in a Beach Day

  • Escape the summer heat by spending a day at the beach to enjoy the sun, sand, and surf.

  • Pack beach essentials like a pop-up canopy, cooler with snacks and drinks, beach toys, frisbees, and outdoor games.

  • Let your toddlers play in the waves, build sandcastles, and search for seashells.

  • Be sure to check the beach's rules and regulations beforehand to ensure a hassle-free day.

8. Head to the Fishing Hole

  • Pack up the family and head to your local fishing hole, whether it's a nearby lake, river, or pond.

  • Fishing can be a great way to connect with nature, unwind, and have fun with your little ones.

  • Don't worry if you or your kids have never fished before - it's easy to learn, and most local parks and recreation departments offer free fishing clinics and equipment rentals to get you started.

  • Spend quality time casting lines, baiting hooks, and patiently waiting for a bite while enjoying the peaceful sounds of the great outdoors.

  • Even if the fish aren't biting, a day spent fishing can be a wonderful way to bond with your family and create lasting memories.

  • Bring a picnic lunch, some books or games, and maybe even a portable speaker to set the mood.

  • Be sure to check your local regulations and obtain any necessary fishing licenses or permits before you head out.

9. Run Around a Playground

  • Playgrounds offer a perfect outdoor space for toddlers to burn off energy by climbing, sliding, swinging, and exploring.

  • Modern playgrounds feature exciting equipment like towering slides, spinning merry-go-rounds, challenging climbing structures, and bouncy trampolines.

  • Playgrounds allow kids to exercise, improve coordination, and have a blast.

  • Pack a picnic blanket, snacks, toys, and books to entertain toddlers during breaks.

  • Remember to apply sunscreen and dress kids in comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing.

  • Check the playground equipment for potential hazards before letting toddlers play.

  • A trip to the playground is a classic summer activity that puts smiles on kids' faces.

10. Stargaze

  • Lie back on a cozy blanket or lawn chair and gaze at the twinkling stars with your little ones.

  • Point out different constellations and encourage your kids to use their imagination to spot familiar shapes or patterns in the night sky.

  • Download a stargazing app to help identify celestial bodies for an educational experience.

  • Visit a local observatory or planetarium for an immersive stargazing adventure with interactive exhibits and guided telescope viewings.

  • Disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and connect with the natural world while sparking your little ones' imaginations as you explore the vast universe together.

12. Fly Kites

  • Experience the thrill of watching a colorful kite soar high in the sky.

  • Kite flying is a classic summer activity that brings joy to kids and adults alike.

  • Head to a wide-open space like a park or beach where the wind is perfect for high-flying fun.

  • Get the family outside and active by running and chasing after the kite as it dances in the breeze.

  • Marvel at the vibrant, whimsical kite gliding gracefully through the air.

  • If you don't have a kite, visit kite shops or rental stations at parks and beaches to purchase or borrow one.

  • Craft your own kite with your little ones using simple materials like paper, string, and sticks.

  • Kite flying is a timeless summer activity that creates a sense of wonder and excitement.

13. Dance in the Rain

  • When summer showers arrive, don't hide indoors - embrace the rain and dance in the downpour with your toddlers!

  • Equip yourselves with rain boots, umbrellas, and rain jackets, and head outside to twirl, jump, and spin as the raindrops fall.

  • Encourage your little ones to stomp in puddles, catch raindrops on their tongues, and revel in the simple pleasure of being out in the rain.

  • Turn on some upbeat music to dance to as you frolic in the downpour, or bring along sidewalk chalk to create colorful masterpieces that will be washed away.

  • Check the weather forecast and avoid thunderstorms or severe weather conditions.

  • Have a warm, dry change of clothes ready when you're done dancing in the rain.

  • Dancing in the rain is a simple yet magical summer activity that can bring a sense of wonder and joy to kids and adults alike.

14. Commission a Treasure Hunt

  • Create an exciting and interactive adventure by organizing a custom treasure hunt for your little ones.

  • Hide a small treasure or prize somewhere in your backyard, at a local park, or around your neighborhood.

  • If age-appropriate, prepare a series of clues and riddles that will lead your kids on a fun-filled scavenger hunt to find the hidden treasure.

  • Incorporate educational elements by asking them to identify certain plants or animals along the way.

  • Adjust the difficulty level of the clues based on your kids' age and skill level.

  • Hide the clues in places like under a rock or taped to a tree, or make them trickier by leaving a trail of footprints or numbered signs.

  • Take plenty of photos to capture your kids' excitement and sense of accomplishment as they work together to solve the mystery.

  • A custom treasure hunt is a fun, engaging, and budget-friendly way to spend a summer day with your family.
